It’s on! Eidolon Fine Arts is delighted to be part of this event featuring an amazing confluence of artistic talent. We’ll be set up at booth #300 with books, prints, and an awesome array of original art from Shelly Wan, João Ruas, Barron Storey, Jason Shawn Alexander, Mike Dringenberg, Michael Zulli and John Watkiss.

Debuting for this show will be João Ruas Minion: the Wabi-Sabi edition. The Wabi-Sabi edition has been meticulously aged, distressed, varnished, glazed and otherwise treated to authentic perfection. This is as exact a replica as it gets! Each book is signed and includes an original drawing from João. The Minion: Wabi-Sabi edition is extremely limited, issued in an edition size of 10.

We’ll have artwork from Barron Storey’s Re:Sex and Cardboard Town, selection of new Fables covers and prelims from João Ruas, copies of Michael Zulli’s Fracture of the Universal Boy and so much more!

João and Shelly will both be in attendance on Saturday and Sunday to say hi,

Artist Statement

So-lil-o-quy [> L. solus, alone + loqui, speak] 1. a talking to oneself 2. lines in a drama spoken by a character as if to himself.

Years of “talking to myself” in my personal journals evolved a graphic language that has allowed me to capture subtle, elusive thoughts and experiences. Often cryptic to others, sometimes even to me—this language has become a habit, a regular journey through variations in process and ideas. These journals are sensitive to daily occurrences, transitive moods, chance interactions with materials and emotional dynamics; drawings in them often begin with abstract mark making. Images “found” within these marks often reveal intriguing thoughts that lie below the threshold of conscious awareness—a Rorschach-like effect that I have used extensively. Soliloquy represents an exploring of my journal language on a different scale and like the images in the journals, continuity is often sacrificed, subjects change abruptly and meanings evolve.

One can easily get lost in self referential expression and at some point in my solitary creation, another voice appeared—an imaginary one. A companion voice, able to say what was not being said otherwise. It came from a character I call Fool. I’ve dealt with imaginary “friends” since childhood when I delighted in a character called Froggy the Gremlin who always did his rascally best to upset guests on a children’s show. I’ve been imitating Froggy’s gravelly, insinuating voice and mischievous laugh all my life. During my stint in the theater as a mature person I fell in love with Shakespeare and relished the Fool who had many of Shakespeare’s best lines in “King Lear”. Like Lear, I needed another opinion, and a chance to be amused by my own.

In this current group of large, off the page works I owe a debt of gratitude to Fool’s sarcasm—but, even more to those who supported my effort. The opportunity to do this show came at a troubled time in my life and I could not have seen it through without their encouragement.

Opening tonight, featuring two new pieces from João Ruas!

Spoke Art Gallery is pleased to announce The First Annual Supersonic Electronic Invitational, a group exhibition of new works by sixteen established and emerging artists, curated by Zach Tutor. Though diverse in their visions and mediums, this group of artists collectively embodies the spirit and urgency of today’s most imaginative creators. Curator Zach Tutor describes the set as “sixteen beacons of true, unfiltered light for the future of the art world, giving promise to the wonderful idea that the world is on the brink of another Golden Age of art.”

Supersonic Electronic runs from January 5, 2012– January 26, 2012.

Jason Shawn Alexander: Undertow

Poised in tandem with the opening day of Art Basel Miami, Jason Shawn Alexander’s massive Undertow exhibit debuts this evening with a special VIP reception at Miami’s 101/exhibit.

With some 20 new paintings, this is Jason’s most epic show to date, with many of the featured works being large scale.

In conjunction with the opening, 101/exhibit presents Jason’s career-spanning monograph, also titled Undertow. At 11 x14” and 192 pages, Undertow is gorgeously comprehensive examination of works from 2004 to present. Issued in an edition of 1000, Undertow is available exclusively through 101/exhibit.

In addition, there is also full show catalog.

Jason will also be exhibiting collaborative works with artist Jim Mahfood at Scope Miami, booth E32.

João Ruas: Yore

Selfishness, complexes, everyday issues and anxiety are not exclusive of our times. It seems obvious but our unconscious arrogant adolescent attitude towards the people that walked on the same grounds we live on, tries to prove the contrary.

‘Yore’ is an ode to echoes, to beliefs and lost truths waiting to be discovered.

João Ruas Yore solo opens this Saturday at Thinkspace Gallery. With nearly 30 new works spanning an amazing gamut of media ranging from etchings to acrylic to elaborately detailed ostrich eggs, Yore is a powerful realization of skill, vision, and insight.

Eidolon Fine Arts is very pleased to make a limited number of João’s Minion facsimile available once more in conjunction with the show opening.

And there’s more: published in association with in Thinkspace, Eidolon Fine Arts is very pleased to present a catalog of the show in a signed edition of 50. The catalog includes a mini-print of Cerberus, and a second sketchbook volume which explores the process and development behind the show.

The long wait for Michael’s Fracture of the Universal Boy is finally over. We’ll have 100 copies of the book available especially for Comic-Con. And if you’re one of our Kickstarter patrons, please do come by and pick your copy up. We’d love the opportunity to thank you personally!

We’ve also got some beautiful new art from Michael that will be debuting for the show: from Fracture images through Michael’s personal work, we’re honored to have him grace our walls.

Eidolon Fine Arts welcomes Jason Shawn Alexander back in 2011.

We’ll be debuting Jason’s new sketchbook, Mikanno II, filled with over 100 pages of goodness! And of course, we’ll have plenty of Jason’s first book, Mikanno I, as well as the Mourners catalog on hand as well.

And that’s not all! Jason has created a series of beautiful small works specifically for this show. Done in a variety of media ranging from ink to oil to encaustic, these pieces are a fantastic opportunity to own a piece of Jason’s personal work at a very reasonable price. Comic Con International 2011: Joao Ruas

Eidolon Fine Arts is delighted to have Joao Ruas live and in person with us this year!

We’re well-prepared with several Fables covers and prelims, ranging from Joao’s start on the title all the way up to some very current pieces. The work is absolutely stunning in person, please come on by booth 4504 and say hi.

And that’s not all: we’re very pleased to be debuting Joao’s Minion sketchbook this year. One of the distinct pleasures of working with artists is the privilege of actually handing artist’s sketchbooks. The evolution of ideas, the process of creation, it’s all right there in a very initmate form. One of the ideas behind Minion is to replicate that experience and share it with everybody. Minion is beautifully-produced facsimile of Joao’s amazing sketchbook, accurate in size, in look and in feel. It’s like holding an actual artist sketchbook in your hands.

Minion has been produced in an edition of 235 for the show. If you like artist’s sketchbooks, Minion will make an extremely unique addition to any collection.

Michael Zulli: The Fracture of the Universal Boy

Well, it’s been a long haul getting this book out there, but we are very pleased to announce that Eidolon Fine Arts sophomore publishing effort, Michael Zulli’s The Fracture of the Universal Boy is officially available for pre-order in the July issue of Diamond Previews! (Order code JUL111105) We’re extremely proud of this one, Michael has literally been working on it for years, and it is time to unleash it into the world.

After twenty odd years making art and comics, Zulli believes that there are universal truths to be found amid the struggle and calling to make art, and indeed, to life itself. Often brutal, sometimes a bit funny, and always surreal as it examines life from a different perspective, The Fracture of the Universal Boy is Zulli’s personal reflection on love, life and art; and both the damage done and the possibility of transcending even the most dire and difficult of times. Part one of a three graphic novel set called The Dream Suite, Zulli’s The Fracture of the Universal Boy is the beginning of a journey we all take in one way or another.

Lined In Lead

Last weekend saw the opening of Lined in Lead: Works in Graphite at Gallery Nucleus. The show consists of works all executed in graphite only, and was a very visceral demonstration of the sheer versatility of the medium, with all of the artists involved taking dramatically different approaches in their work.

Featuring Eidolon Fine Arts artists Barron Storey, Shelly Wan, Michael Zulli and João Ruas, the opening was a rousing success, drawing a great crowd to come out and have a look at some amazing artwork.

In conjunction with the event, Gallery Nucleus has also released two beautiful new prints: Gathering, from João Ruas and The Persian Envoy, from Michael Zulli.

Introducing Michael Zulli

Eidolon Fine Arts is proud to announce the representation of Michael Zulli. Eidolon Fine Arts has worked with Michael on number of projects over the years and are very pleased to further enrich our relationship.

Michael is familiar to many though his work on Puma Blues, J. Michael Straczynski’s Delicate Creatures, and of course, multiple project with Neil Gaiman, including his Eisner award nominated run on Sandman. What may not be so familiar is Michael’s fine art: Lushly detailed, delicately rendered, Michael’s craft harkens back to a forgotten era. Expect to see lots of Michael’s personal work on Eidolon Fine Arts soon!
